Darkwave Music Studio
Psychic Wound NYC is the transformation of a raw industrial loft into a high-performance music studio designed for both creative production and professional sound engineering. The client—an independent producer inspired by the sonic world of new wave pioneers such as Joy Division, Bauhaus, and Depeche Mode—sought a space that merges technical precision with the atmospheric intensity of the music he creates. The design balances acoustical performance with the moody, layered aesthetics of the genre, integrating advanced sound isolation, tuned environments for mixing and recording, and a visual identity that echoes the dark, minimal, and expressive spirit of new wave culture.

Where architecture, sound, and identity converge
Creating a high-functioning music studio in the heart of New York City posed distinct challenges, particularly within the framework of an industrial loft. The existing space—defined by exposed concrete surfaces, raw structure, and a wide-open floor plate—offered both opportunities and constraints. While the loft provided the scale and flexibility required for a professional recording environment, it also carried inherent acoustic complications: hard reflective surfaces, limited isolation, and close proximity to neighbors in a dense urban setting.
The project’s dual role—as both a residence and a professional-grade studio—required a delicate balance. The design had to support daily living while delivering a technically precise sound environment where music could be recorded, mixed, and produced at the highest level. This meant not only minimizing the transmission of sound to adjacent units, but also protecting recordings from ambient noise and vibrations infiltrating from the surrounding building and neighborhood.
Beyond technical demands, the architecture was tasked with embodying the ethos of the client’s musical inspiration. Rooted in the dark, atmospheric world of new wave and post-punk, the client envisioned a space that would not only facilitate music production but also embody the aesthetic identity of his practice. This aspiration extended to the broader mission of Psychic Wound NYC: to create a place where architecture, sound, and identity converge in a powerful and elegant way.
The challenge, therefore, was not simply to retrofit an industrial loft into a functional studio, but to craft an environment that is acoustically precise, visually compelling, and culturally expressive—a home, a workplace, and an artistic statement in equal measure.
When Sonic Patterns Become Architectural Form
studioSTIGSGAARD approached the commission through a synthesis of technology, craft, and cultural reference. Computational sound translation tools were employed to analyze and visualize acoustic patterns, transforming sonic data into formal strategies that shaped both the aesthetic and architectural language of the project. This process allowed the design to move beyond problem-solving, using sound itself as a driver of form, atmosphere, and material expression.
At the same time, the challenge of building a high-performance recording environment within the loft was met through rigorous acoustic engineering. In consultation with a studio designer who had previously collaborated with Depeche Mode, the team developed a strategy for maximum isolation and sound control. Central to this was the decision to elevate the entire studio volume above the polished concrete floor, creating a “room within a room” system. This construction ensured that vibrations and sound transmission between the studio and the building structure were minimized, while preserving the loft’s industrial character.
The outcome was not only an acoustically sealed environment of professional quality, but also an architectural expression deeply aligned with the client’s inspiration. The elevated studio, suspended within the loft, emerges as both a technical solution and a symbolic centerpiece—a vessel for sound that embodies the dark, immersive intensity of new wave. By fusing acoustic precision with an evocative aesthetic, the design achieves both technical excellence and artistic resonance, positioning Psychic Wound NYC as a home, a workplace, and a cultural statement.
